36 Days of Type

Personal Project

Role: Graphic Design & Illustration

I always wanted to participate in the 36 Days of Type challenge on Instagram, but I knew I wanted to set extra guidelines for myself.

Every day for 36 days, I created a different letterform using a hand-drawn colorful square and a limited number of different paper shapes.

The Rules

Rule 01. Traditional Art ONLY.
I was sick of exclusively designing on the computer everyday during my 9-5.
I was working with paper, paint, pencils, and my hands.

Rule 02. We’re making this easy.
If I was actually going to finish this challenge, I had to make it easy for myself. We're working small, relatively abstract, and we’re not spending a lot of time on this. This kept it light, fun, and made for better artwork in the end.

Rule 03. Everything is temporary.
I knew I wanted to create these letterforms using negative space. To challenge myself, I tried to stick with a limited number of white paper shapes for all 36 letters and numbers. To make things more flexible and, ultimately, easier for myself (see Rule 02), I decided not to glue any of these letterform collages down.

the matching nails were a nice coincidence
